From Khayelitsha to the Cricket Field: Developing the Next Generation of Coaches

In the heart of Khayelitsha, where talent runs deep and community spirit thrives, a new group of cricket coaches are building their skills and developing their coaching ability through the CATCH Trust Coaches Academy. Our ongoing coaching development programme, which runs from March to July, is shaping over 30 leaders and aspiring coaches aged 18 to 40, into elite-level coaches ready to make an impact in cricket within South Africa.

Each week, passionate coaches come to the CATCH Trust Centre of Cricket Excellence to hone and sharpen both their practical and theoretical understanding of coaching. With a  mix of hands-on sessions and classroom learning, the programme equips coaches with essential tools to succeed in this ever changing sports landscape.

What Have The Coaches Learned So Far?

  • The Role of a Coach & Mentor: Beyond technique, coaches are learning how to inspire, guide, and influence their athletes both on and off the field.
  • How to deal with the Mental Health of an Athlete: Understanding the mental wellbeing of athletes is key, and our coaches have gained tools to support players through both highs and lows.
  • Cricket Coaching Skills: From batting drills to bowling strategy, they’re mastering the building blocks of the game.

And there’s still more to come.

With upcoming sessions covering nutrition and injury prevention, these coaches are becoming well-rounded experts in their field. And by the end of the programme, they’ll walk away with a Certified Coaching Certificate.

This is more than just a coaching course. It’s nurturing local leadership, investing in future generations, and proving that with the right support, talent can shine on any pitch.

We extend our thanks to Bat for A Chance for their generous sponsorship and funding of this programme. Their support is not only helping to build better coaches but is also uplifting communities and changing lives through sport.
