Sinelethu Yaso: A Journey Fueled by Passion and Opportunity

As we celebrate Women’s Month, we honour the stories of young women like Sinelethu Yaso, whose journey through sport reflects courage, commitment, and the power of opportunity.

Now entering her eighth year in cricket, Sinelethu reflects on how the game has shaped her. With one Pro50 appearance for the Western Province Senior Women’s team under her belt—where she took 1 wicket for just 12 runs in four overs—this promising young bowler knows her story is only beginning.

Born and raised in Khayelitsha, Sinelethu’s love for cricket began early. She attended Impendulo Primary School, where she was first introduced to the game, and in 2018, at just 12 years old, she joined the Gary Kirsten Foundation, now known as CATCH Trust. Through her dedication and talent, she earned a bursary to attend Bellville Technical High School, a life-changing opportunity that supported both her academic and athletic growth.

Her steady rise through the ranks speaks to her perseverance and talent. In 2019, she was selected for the Western Province U16 girls’ team, followed by a place in the U19 squad the next year. By 2020, Sinelethu had earned a call-up to the senior provincial side—a proud moment that marked the first of many milestones.

Being part of this foundation has been a privilege, she says. Not just for the cricketing opportunities it has provided but also for the life-changing school bursary that has shaped my education.

Eyes Set on the Future

As she looks to the future, Sinelethu is focused on development—refining her bowling, enhancing her fitness, and taking bold strides towards her dream of playing for South Africa.

Cricket has given me opportunities I never imagined, and I am determined to make the most of every chance to grow and excel, she says with quiet determination.

In a month dedicated to celebrating the strength and achievements of women, Sinelethu’s journey reminds us that when passion meets opportunity, extraordinary things happen.
