WEP 2026 Launch: A Powerful Start to a Promising Year

Last Friday marked an exciting and inspiring moment as we officially launched the 2026 Women’s Empowerment Programme (WEP). What unfolded was more than just an event, it was a vibrant celebration of energy, connection, and opportunity.

With over 70 girls registering and signing up for this year’s programme, the afternoon was filled with excitement and curiosity. From the moment the girls arrived, there was a palpable sense of anticipation for what lies ahead.

The session began on a high note, with singing, dancing, and a variety of engaging ice-breaker activities. These moments of joy and laughter helped to create an open and welcoming environment, allowing the girls to connect, express themselves, and feel at ease.

Following the ice-breakers, prospective participants were introduced to the Women’s Empowerment Programme, what it stands for and what they can expect throughout the year. This provided a meaningful opportunity to unpack the purpose of WEP and highlight the value it brings to the lives of young women within our community.

The energy carried through to the next segment of the afternoon as the girls were divided into groups and taken outside for fun cricket-based activities. What made this particularly special was that these sessions were led by current CATCH participants already involved in cricket. Seeing young leaders step up to guide and inspire their peers was a powerful and empowering moment, reinforcing the programmes mission of growth through mentorship and shared experience.

What is the Women’s Empowerment Programme (WEP)?

The Women’s Empowerment Programme (WEP) was launched in February 2023 through a partnership between CATCH Trust and the MCC Foundation. It was designed specifically for teenage girls who train at the CATCH Trust Centre in Khayelitsha, the second-largest township in South Africa.

At its core, WEP uses cricket as a platform for personal development. The programme goes beyond the game, creating opportunities for young women to grow in confidence, leadership, and self-awareness.

Through engaging monthly workshops, WEP provides a safe, supportive, and all-female space where participants can learn, share, and develop. Each session blends educational content with interactive activities, ensuring that learning is both meaningful and enjoyable.

The programme also brings in guest speakers from partner organisations who offer valuable insights on a range of relevant topics, from health and wellbeing to leadership, digital and life skills. These sessions open up important conversations and equip participants with tools they can carry into their daily lives.

Looking Ahead

The 2026 launch was a powerful reminder of the impact that intentional spaces like WEP can have. With such strong interest and enthusiasm already evident, this year promises to be one of growth, empowerment, and transformation.

We look forward to walking this journey alongside each participant as they discover their strengths, build meaningful connections, and step confidently into their futures.
