Over the past weekend, our senior youth boys team proudly represented CATCH Trust at the annual Fairtree T20 Tournament, hosted at Parklands College.
The first match saw CATCH take on the hosts, Parklands College. With overcast conditions assisting the bowlers, the opening pair of Sandiso Bungane and Luyanda Dyantyi set the tone with disciplined spells. The first breakthrough came in the third over, when Oyena Mbanya took a sharp catch off Dyantyi’s bowling. Parklands’ innings was contained until the 15th over, when Hlumelo Ndikinda dismissed opener Carl Warrender for 43 (55). Ndikinda continued his spell of dominance, finishing with figures of 3-0-26-3, supported by a brilliant one-handed catch from wicket-keeper Angalakha Ntsondwa. Parklands ended on 106-4 in 20 overs.
CATCH lost quick wickets early in their chase, but a steady 24 (37) from Avuya Buti and a composed 24* (15) from Mbanya guided the team to a 3-wicket win.
The final against Curro Durbanville followed shortly after. Losing the toss, CATCH was asked to bowl first. Once again, Dyantyi struck early, removing JP Smith in the second over. He went on to claim three wickets, with support from Mbanya (2 wickets) and Unathi Magolza (3 wickets for just 4 runs in 1.5 overs). Curro were bowled out for 112 in their 20 overs.
The chase wasn’t without its challenges, but a calm, unbeaten 38 (46) from Ntsondwa, supported by a quickfire 22 (15) from Sive Makeleni, secured a 4-wicket victory for CATCH — and the tournament title.
Adding to the triumph, Ntsondwa was named Best Fielder, while Magolza earned the Best Bowler award.
After finishing runners-up in last year’s edition, this year’s squad proved their determination, teamwork, and resilience — bringing the trophy home to Khayelitsha.
This is a testament to the work being done at CATCH Trust, and how the coaches are shaping up the next generation of players.
