For many children in South Africa, the love for cricket is undeniable, but the opportunities to play the sport are limited. Access to safe, well-equipped facilities remains a challenge in many communities, leaving young talent unseen and dreams unrealised.
That’s why the work of Gary Kirsten, former South African coach, ICC Cricket World Cup winner, and Board Member & Trustee of CATCH Trust, is so inspiring. Gary has embarked on a mission to build cricket facilities in underserved areas, giving children the chance to learn, play, and grow through sport.
“If we can give kids the facilities and the coaching, their natural talent will shine. That’s when real change happens,” Gary shares in the video below.
Why This Matters
Sport is more than just a game, it’s a platform for teaching discipline, teamwork, leadership, and resilience. By creating access to cricket in communities that have been historically left out, Gary’s initiative does more than level the playing field, it changes lives.
One of those lives is Somila, the captain of the CATCH Trust and Khayelitsha U19 Girls team. She’s working hard towards a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, a tour to England next year, with fellow teammates. Her dedication on and off the field shows the transformative power of sport when young people are given the right support.
- Empowering Youth: Facilities provide a safe and structured environment for children to channel their energy and develop skills.
- Nurturing Talent: Young players like Somila get the coaching and match experience they need to chase big dreams.
- Building Community: Cricket becomes a shared passion that unites people of all ages.
The dream is simple yet powerful: every child should have the chance to hold a bat, bowl a ball, and pursue their cricket ambitions—whether it’s playing in their local team or representing their country abroad.
Be Part of the Change
This is not just Gary’s mission, it’s a community effort. Whether through donations, equipment sponsorships, or volunteering, there are many ways to get involved and support the growth of grassroots cricket in South Africa.
